Right Brain/Left Brain Rhythm Challenge

Works best when practicing to a favorite song.
Start by using right arm only. While counting "1 - 2 - 1 - 2", snap arm straight above head, then low at side and continue.
Switch to doing the same activity with the left arm only.
Switching back to right arm only, now count "1 - 2 - 3," while snapping high, out to side, then down low on repeat.
Switch to doing the same activity with the left arm only.
NOW THE CHALLENGE:
Switch back to right arm only snapping high and low with the two beat pattern, while that is going - turn off that part of the brain and ADD the left arm snapping the three beat pattern.
Once this is mastered, switch to left arm on two beat pattern, adding right arm on three beat pattern.

Pull a move out of the hat...

Using index cards, laminated squares, cardstock or any other material of choice, create a deck of dancing moves to throw in a hat, bucket, bowl, etc.
Make a decision as a group if each move is going to last for eight beats or 16 beats!  The fewer beats, the more advanced the group.
Choose any lively music and allow students to pull a dance move out of the hat.  Start with that move until everyone has is learned, now add move #2.  Keep going until students have put together an entire dance!

Some dance moves to choose from include:
  • Stomps
  • Criss-Cross
  • Slides
  • High Double Fist Pounds
  • Low Double Fist Pounds
  • Crossing Over High/Low Fists
  • Bust the Wall
  • Palm Trees
  • Raise the Roof
  • Press the Floor
  • Snake Double Clap
  • Shoulder Shrug
  • Squat and Shoot
  • Jumping Jack
  • Rock Step Tuck Jump
  • Twist
  • Robot
  • Sprinkler
  • Lawnmower
  • Shopping Cart
  • Cross and Spin

Group Dances that Never Die

Groups dances that stand the test of time. When the music comes on, people start to move!

Dance Machine

Start with one student and allow them to make up their own eight beats of dance steps.  They may then teach that combination to the rest of the group.
Student #2 now adds on their own eight beats... and so on.
By the end of the group, you have an original dance!

Rehearsal Fun

Sometimes you need the rehearsal time, but want to switch it up in a way to keep it fresh and fun! Here are some ideas to rehearse and laugh:
  • Clean choreography to completely different music with the same tempo
  • Glow stick rehearsal: all students wear black, but attach glow sticks to body to create "stick man" rehearsal
  • Shout out different charactes and have the students dance like that character, i.e. TRex arms, monkeys, competitive cheer, cowboys, etc.
